NettoSaito's Game of the Year - Tomb Raider

2013 has been a year that I have a lot of mixed feelings about. In my personal life, a lot of tragic events occurred. I three family members (one of which I was VERY close too), my grandma lost vision in one of her eyes, and someone I went to school with met a tragic end as well... Really, the year has been quite sad with heartbreak after heartbreak; however, it hasn't all been bad (I started a new job after all!) When it comes to the video game industry, 2013 was actually an amazing year. New game consoles hit the shelves, a lot of heavy hitters finally came out, and we got a lot of exciting news about the future as well. Really, looking back at it all, 2013 has to be one of the best years in gaming we have had in a long time... That is why this next post isn't going to be easy for me.

Every year all of us here at NGR take our time to write an article discussing a game we felt deserved the "Game of the Year" award, or rather, our version of it. Looking back at every game that has been released this year, I actually had a hard time deciding on which one I would personally choose. Near the start of the year we got Fire Emblem Awakening (which is one of the best Fire Emblems in my opinion), we got amazing new IPs such as The Last of Us, we got a directors cut of Deus Ex Human Revolution, we got a sequel to The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, Assassin's Creed IV is easily one of the best Assassin's Creed games, Tearaway is a very creative Vita game (and a very much needed one), Tales of Xillia was finally released in the west, Nintendo finally released Pikmin 3, and the list could go on. Really this year was filled with a lot of surprises, and there were just so many great titles that deserve to be discussed here; however, there is only one game I want to focus on. It is a game I had personally waited a long time for, and it is a game I am considering buying again very soon. So, what is this game? Well, its none other than the Tomb Raider reboot!

The thing about Tomb Raider is, I was never really a fan of the series. I played a game or two on the PS1, I played some of the "spin off" titles, and Underworld was one of my first PlayStation 3 games. Even so, I just never got into the games. I thought that Lara seemed like a cool character, the story seemed interesting, and the gameplay was solid (for the time), but I just never really got into the series. Something about it just didn't keep me going back. Now, with that being said, I was excited to hear about the reboot. I was happy to see Lara being redesigned in a much more realistic way, and I personally couldn't wait to see her new "origins" story. I followed the game from the moment it was announced, and I went straight to GameStop to pick it up as soon as it hit the shelves (sadly my car battery died and I got stranded for about 3 hours).

When I finally got to play the game, I was pretty much blown away. While the game wasn't anything truly ground breaking, it was a game that just did everything right. I was interested in the story from the get go, I liked seeing Lara as a "normal girl" who had to learn to survive on an island filled with killers, and I loved how the game was a bit more open ended. While in past Tomb Raider games you were forced into specific areas for each chapter, this time around you could basically go anywhere on the island, and new areas were always becoming unlocked. As Lara learned new skills and abilities (or as you upgraded equipment) you could use your new found abilities to advance to areas that were previously out of reach. This style of exploration and progression just reminded me so much of other games I loved (such as Metroid), and it gave me a reason to search every nook and cranny.

The gameplay itself was also very solid. The way Lara moved/was controlled in general felt very smooth, and it made the game a joy to play. She would interact with the world around her as she walked through it (for example she would rest her hand against a cave wall to help keep her balance and make her way through it faster), she would auto duck and take cover behind objects when hiding from the enemy, the combing sections were very fluid, the gun play was dead on, the few puzzles were a nice change of pace, the ability to hunt and salvage resource was nice, and the game even had a multiplayer mode to kill time in. Tomb Raider was just one of them games that had a lot to offer, and it was a game I just really enjoyed playing. Truthfully I could go on and on about why I like the game, or what it did right, but that's what reviews are for. For more information over Tomb Raider; feel free to check out my review right here at Netto's Game Room. Overall, Tomb Raider was just a game I really enjoyed, and that is why I have chosen it as my Game of the Year for 2013.

Netto's Game Room - Games of the Year Coming Soon

Every year here at Netto's Game Room we have always done our version of the "Game of the Year" award. At the end of each year/during the beginning of the new year, each writer takes their time to look back at all of the games released over the past year, and then they choose one to be their top game to discuss.

While normally our reviews and articles tend to stay on the "professional" side of things, our Game of the Year posts are actually quite a bit different. They are articles on the personal level, where we each get to state our opinions and our opinions alone. They are not reviews, and they are not articles to talk you into playing the games, they are our own personal feelings, and they will be very informal.

As of right now there is no time frame for when these articles will go live. Each writer is free to publish them at anytime, but I can say that it will be awhile before mine goes live. I still have a lot I need to take care of, and I am unsure of when I will have the free time to actually write the article. On top of that I also have a few reviews in the works which I would personally like to publish very soon, but time just won't allow it.

On another note, the Tumblr, Google +, and Facebook pages will go back into full swing very soon. The tragic loss of my uncle has put a stop to things for awhile, but I will get things up and running again very soon. I'm sorry that we had to semi-shut down, but I would like to thank you all for understanding.

Well, until next time guys... And thanks again.

Rest in Peace Uncle Mark!

A few days ago I let everyone here at NGR know about how my uncle was doing... Sadly, he didn't pull through. Yesterday morning, 12/26/2013, my uncle passed away at 6:32 AM. He was only 42 years old. His official cause of death was an infection in his lungs, which just wouldn't heal. Each passing day he got worse and worse, and the doctors were starting to lose hope. That morning his heart finally gave out, and he was gone.

Although he was married, my uncle was never able to have any kids of his own. When his wife was younger she had some issues, which resulted in them not being able to produce a child. Even so, he was very close to all of his family members, and we were always there for him. A few years back he opened up his very own bakery which I personally worked at for quite awhile. We would see each other all the time, we would talk about the new video games coming out, or the new super hero movies, and we would always just talk and have fun. Over them years we became closer and closer, and I will never forget the time I spent with him. So many good memories...

Besides owning a bakery, Mark was really into toy collecting. He had almost EVERY Star Wars figure out there, the basement of his house was a massive Star Wars room, he had almost every original Transformer, and he also had a lot of the collectors Superman and Batman toys. If you walked into his basement, or his office at the bakery, you would see walls and walls of shelves of the stuff. His collection was quite impressive, and he was always changing up his displays to show them off to the world.

Well, I just wanted to say that me and my family will miss you Mark. I don't know if you can see this where you are right now, but I know this isn't goodbye. See you later. And don't worry, I'll make sure to play that Transformers game you got me, and I will review it for the blog. Look forward to it!

Zelda announced for Super Smash Bros!

Today it was announced that Zelda will be, somewhat predictably, rejoining the cast of Super Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U!

No, not Link! The Princess!

Yes, her!

However, looking at some screenshots, it would appear that she has a somewhat different move set! For example, there's this screenshot featuring an armored soldier from one of the Legend of Zelda games:

Does this mean we'll be looking at a changed move set? Or perhaps this is an assist trophy? Or maybe even something entirely new? Only time will tell. For now, I'm happy to see yet another of my regulars returning to the series!

See the rest of the screenshots at the official Super Smash Bros. website.

Future plans postponed for now

Hello everyone, I'm NettoSaito. For awhile now I've had some big plans for the blog, and I was hoping to do something in just a few days for Christmas; however, something major has come up, and I cannot be here to follow through with my plans.

Last Friday my uncle, whom I am very close with, was rushed to the ER. He was having problems breathing and his lungs were filling with CO2. After seeing what type of condition he was in they transferred him to the ICU of a larger hospital. This is where he remains to this very moment.

He, is in bad shape. His lungs are filled with infection, his kidneys are having issues, and the infection may be effecting his heart as well. It is bad. Yesterday he finally started to show improvements, but he still has a long way to go. He has a breathing tube which is the only thing keeping him breathing, and the doctors had to run a tube into his heck and directly to his heart to pump medication through his body much faster. It has been helping but he is taking the recovery process one step at a time. As I said, things are still bad and he is in very critical condition. Really the only thing we can do is pray, this is in God's hands now.

With that being said, I will not be posting on the blog for some time. The other writers are free to keep doing as they see fit, but this is it from me for now. Thank you guys for understanding, and I hope you keep my uncle Mark in your thoughts and prayers.

Persona Q - Trailer 3

The 3rd Persona Q trailer has finally been released, and this time around we get to see a little bit more gameplay, as well as some dialogue (Japanese) between the characters. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, an RPG having dialogue, but the thing about Persona is, the main characters are silent. In both Persona 3 and 4, you are asked to name the main characters, and throughout the game you choose what they say. The only time the characters actually spoke was during battle, and a few times during cutscenes; however, this time around both characters will speak of their own accord, and they will be using their canon names as well (Makoto and Yu respectively). Dialogue choices are still in the game, but it is still unclear just how far they will go. The battle system will also be in a first person point of view, like the dungeon crawling itself, but the characters will attack in 3D. For more information, check out the trailer below.

Hyrule warriors teaser (working title)

Hello there readers! What happens when you combine Tecmo Koei with Nintendo? You get this crazy awesome game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOq4IiuRMWk

Yes readers what you just saw is true and not a joke, and its not April 1. Take a minute to let this sink in . . . . . . . . I am HYPED!

As crazy as this crossover is, I still love the idea of a The legend of Zelda war game with multiple playable characters! Possible online multiplayer too.

I wonder how Tecmo Koei convinced Nintendo of making this game, a third party developer hasn't touched the Zelda series since Capcom did Minish Cap.

I can only say best of luck Tecmo! Make us proud!

That is all from me readers! Have a awesome day!

The Retro Goat Reviews- Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros. is a 2D crossover fighting game starring twelve of Nintendo's most recognizable characters. The game was developed by HAL Laboratory, maker of the Kirby games, and released around the world in 1999. It's definitely a better game with more players, but it's still a very solid fighting game, especially with all the risks taken with their innovative style.

Story- 5/10
The story is a rather ambiguous tale, with there being virtually no plot. However the game gives just enough for it to be open to interpretation, with each players thought on the plot being varied. Is it about a kid playing with his Nintendo toys? The Nintendo characters fighting a seemingly omnipotent being? Everyone just goofing off and rough-housing? It's hard to tell, but the speculation is enormous. I think that this story type makes the game more interesting in general, but it isn't necessarily a good plot as there isn't a true plot attached to it. It's mostly just a tacked on excuse for Nintendo characters to battle, which is common in fighting games, but the storyline isn't the most important part.

Gameplay- 9/10
This is the most important aspect of a fighting game, and Super Smash Bros. has one of the most unique fighting mechanics in the genre. As noted, Super Smash Bros. is a 2D fighting game, but it's mechanic for winning revolves around ring outs after doing damage to help as opposed to the general health bar depletion that is normal for fighting games. It's a very unique mechanic that's supported entirely by the games creative and wonderful stage designs. The ten stages are almost entirely based off of classic Nintendo games, such as a stage for the original Super Mario Bros or The Legend of Zelda's Hyrule Castle stage. The only one not based off of a Nintendo franchise is the Final Destination, which serves as the final boss stage. The stages do subtly help make the game, as if they weren't so well designed, the games unique fighting mechanic would crash and burn. The other core gameplay mechanic that makes Super Smash Bros. so addicting is the multiplayer. Needless to say, multiplayer requires multiple people, so the game isn't as enjoyable by yourself. The single player aspect is enjoyable, but lacking in content. You can do almost everything in a single day, and then all that's left is practicing for when you play with friends. It kills time, but the game is much more enjoyable with friends. That's the only real issue in the gameplay though, and it's a minor issue considering the popularity of Super Smash Bros. Besides that, it's very nicely done and the time spent playing with friends will be uncountable.

Character Roster- 9/10
There are twelve total playable characters, with the variety in the roster being nicely done. Many of Nintendo's core franchises have a representative in the roster, with a few surprises being thrown in the mix such as Captain Falcon from F-Zero or Ness from Earthbound. There were a few noticeably missing characters such as Bowser, but the game does have a memory limit and it chose many representatives for different franchises (eight different franchises in total for the twelve character roster) as opposed to over-populating the game with one franchise. It's a great roster for the first game in the franchise, and it allowed for the roster to be expanded upon without making the game less fun.

Controls- 8/10
The control is very simplistic, but effective. As an N64 controller isn't set up for proper fighting games, with there only being two action buttons as opposed to four, the game gets by due to taking advantage of the control sticks capabilities. The control stick is both used for the running, jumping, and attacks, but it isn't difficult to operate thanks to it's surprisingly fluent control. It moves seamlessly, and it works greatly off of the consoles controller. As expected, since it's a console exclusive, but it still deserves praise for how it works with little issue. Now, it's not perfect, as it can get annoying returning to ledges when there is no jump button as the control stick does everything and the D-Pad taunts, but for the first in the series it pulls off what could have been a confusing control scheme very easily.

Graphics- 9/10
Super Smash Bros. has some of the best graphics for an N64 game, and each character model matches up to or surpasses the models in their respective games. Link looks more refined than he does in Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario looks far better than he did in Super Mario 64, or any spin-off released at the time, and so on. Each character is very well animated and are as detailed as they can be. The stage designs are also well done, with each one clearly representing their original franchises (like the aforementioned Super Mario Bros. stage) and are also well designed. The items are all nicely done, and the Pokemon deserve special mentioning for each looking incredible and, save for one or two, look as great as they can. They even look at least as good, if not possibly better, than they do in Pokemon Stadium, which hadn't been released at the time. My only gripe about the graphics is how bland some of the mini game stages look. The "Break the Targets" stages look okay, but have a blank black background for each character, and the "Race to the Finish" game is almost entirely gray. However, that's a very small nitpick compared to how well done the overall graphics are.

Sound- 10/10
The sounds are absolutely amazing. They give the game more power, they give players a sense of nostalgia, and they're a great delight to listen to. Each stage has the full song for whatever title they're representing, each character makes the appropriate sounds for their attacks, as well as a generally humorous sound they occasionally make when they are knocked out, and each song is worthy of being listened to on its own, with or without stage. They also do a good job of making each one of the few dozen items have individual sounds, such as each Pokemon's cry or the Hammer from Donkey Kong as it delivers a world of hurt onto every poor unfortunate soul it comes in contact with. The only re-used sound I can think of is Luigi's special Up+B attack, an uppercut of sorts, making the same sound as the baseball bat, when each respective attack is used to it's fullest potential, and that's only due to them both being to represent an attack that seeks to kill a player immediately so it's forgivable. Due to console limitations there can only be one song per stage, but they pick the right songs for each stage. Overall, the sounds and songs of the game are just perfect.

Buy or Borrow?
Buy it. The original cartridge is expensive, but the game will be played for hours on end with friends and family. If you just want to enjoy the game without spending the additional money on the cartridge, it is available on the Wii Shop for 1000 points (ten bucks). Either way, this is a must have game for anyone looking for an addictive and exciting multiplayer game, and the only reason to pass it up is if you and your friends don't play fighting games of any variety, and even then I recommend you try this game out.

Super Smash Bros. managed to take an extremely experimental idea and make it into one of the top five best games on the N64, and it's one that can be enjoyed by just about anyone. It's addictive, it's fun, it's fast paced but easy to learn, it's an amazing game with very few flaws. If you have the ability to purchase this game in one form or another, it's definitely worth your time. Just make sure to invite your friends over to play it with you, or you may eventually get bored fighting computers non-stop.

Final Score- 9/10

Google flags a developer of his own content

Hello there readers! Time for some controversy. Two days ago Jonathan Blow a indie developer of a Sony timed exclusive game called The Witness, told us that he got flagged in Youtube for showing footage, of his own game a month ago.

Yes people, Google's new "protective" system has been doing a lot of bad things for the past month now,  even developers OWN content gets flagged for baffling reasons. . . . We can only hope that Google has noticed this and started fixing it.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Trailer Released

The Ultra Street Fighter IV trailer has been released, with the release date being sometime in early 2014. This will be the fourth installment of Street Fighter IV to be released, with the original Street Fighter IV being released for home consoles in 2009.
This version is set to include five new characters, including Poison from Final Fight and Elena from Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. It is also going to update the combat system, including the ability to use either of a characters Ultra Combos during a match, rather than choosing which one you’ll use before the match.
While reception has been mixed, with the usual complaints about Capcom’s sequel stagnation being prevalent, it does at least appear to be a decent sized update and fans of Street Fighter IV may want to check it out. The download price is set to be $20 and the retail version will be $40.
You can watch the trailer here:

The Retro Goat Reviews- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is a farming/life-simulation game, the tenth Harvest Moon game in the series, and is the first one on the Gamecube. It's also one of the darkest entries in the series, and is a bit of a stark contrast from a normal Harvest Moon game.

Story- 7/10
While the story itself is much darker, the character development is rather lacking. In this game, the main focus of the story is less finding a bride and more taking care of your child. This unfortunately means that while your child is well developed, your bride is essentially just a stock personality type, rather than a character that you'd actually fall for in real life. I find this to be a bit disappointing, but the idea of raising your child to be their own special character is an intriguing concept. If the development was a bit more balanced, with each important character getting their own notable qualities, then it could be a stellar game, but it just falls short of being enjoyable in this installment. The rest of the story is actually pretty decent, with characters aging and growing to be something of old friends, but they aren't enough to make up for the lackluster development of the main cast. I will give them credit for making the more bit characters lovable and quirky. Even if it doesn't save the story, it does make the tedious moments seem slightly more enjoyable and they can make town life somewhat more enjoyable. But the less noteworthy characters being enjoyable and the characters you'll talk to as much as possible being bland does not balance out to make the town memorable. The story itself does get dark at times, and it's mature approach is pretty interesting to witness. Though a game trying to hard to be dark and edgy can make a story feel forced, this game is pretty subtle with the darker nature, as it takes a realistic approach but relatively lighthearted approach. It's nice to see the dark side of life without being too overly depressing, and it makes for the older audience of Harvest Moon have something new to experience without being utterly heart breaking to the younger players. This game seems like it has the groundwork done to be incredible, but it doesn't live up to it's complete potential, even if it can be entertaining and quirky at times.

Gameplay- 6/10
As it's a Harvest Moon game, the gameplay can get a bit tedious at times, but it's normally offset by the unique and entertaining characters. Sadly without the characters to make the gameplay more enjoyable, the gameplay alone doesn't make this game fun. However there is still that natural Harvest Moon charm that can make the dull parts more tolerable, even if it isn't as fun as it is in other titles. It's always nice to roam around town and talking to characters, working on your crops and taking care of your animals. As noted earlier, much of the story is based on your characters child, and as such a good deal of the gameplay focuses on the kid too. It's honestly a bit cute to watch them grow, and to help them develop into a mature and successful person. But having the main focus of the game no longer be on you is, and this sounds terrible, pretty boring. They're fun to help, but it's not your character. You don't personally grow to become a better farmer, and you don't have much to expand upon in terms of the farm or your marriage. If your favorite aspect of life stimulation games is raising children, then you'll find the gameplay to be much more enjoyable. But I personally like the farming and marriage aspects of Harvest Moon games, and those take a backseat to raising your child. It's very experimental, and it could be decent if it was more balanced out, but your main purpose in the game is to be a parent, not a farmer. As a side note, there are only three marriage candidates, further showing that marriage isn't a core aspect of the game. It seems mostly tacked on so you have a wife to give you a child, and there's little reason to care about which one you marry past shallow, physical reasons. The farming is still pretty run of the mill, and it doesn't really improve on past installments, but at least it's still simple and fun to do.

Graphics- 7/10
The graphics aren't particularly bad, but they're nothing stellar. It's pretty average, but it's nothing noteworthy. It's just a standard looking game with a moderate amount to load. The character designs are decent enough, and each character has a distinguishing appearance, with none looking particularly generic. As for the design of the game, it's got a very quaint feeling, and it makes the game seem somewhat peaceful, in an odd way. It's nothing particularly award winning, but it makes the game somehow more pleasing.

Sound- 7/10
The sounds are much like the graphics, nothing worth talking about, but adding to the calm and quaint nature of the game. They all sound accurate, with cows sounding like cows and dogs sounding like dogs, so there's nothing to complain about. The soundtrack, if it can even be called, is not memorable in any way, but it also isn't grating on your ears. It's just so average, but peaceful.

Replay Value- Moderate
As with every Harvest Moon game, it's extremely addictive, but the replay value isn't as high, due to the more simplistic nature of this game. The game can be considered pretty easy, with it not taking much effort to make yourself married and wealthy, so you'll run out of things to do unless you find taking care of a child to be exciting. There's still that special charm that's hard to explain that makes the game hard to put down though, and it's fun in smaller doses. But you'll eventually run out of things to do, and the repetition of a farming game can become more noticeable. But still, it's not a game that's easy to put down, and you'll at least feel the need to play for some time.

Buy or Borrow?
If you're a fan of Harvest Moon games, you'll likely be drawn to this game. It's by no means perfect, but it's no less addictive than a normal Harvest Moon game. You may be disappointed, or you may fall in love with it, but you should definitely try it out to find out your opinion on it. If you're new to the series, this one may not be the best to try out first, but it's worth a try. It doesn't properly capture what makes the series so addictive and enjoyable, but it's still got the noticeable charm. I'd recommend borrowing this game if you're new to the series, but you also may want to try a different game in the series first. Give it a shot if you can't borrow it, it isn't a bad game, it can just get a bit boring sometimes. For the most part, you won't feel ripped off if you buy it, but it may not live up to your expectations.

Overall, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is a decent game, but it's nothing particularly memorable. It's a decent time waster, but it isn't the best in the series. It is however a game that shouldn't be overlooked, as opinions can vary pretty drastically with this game. If you're a fan of past installments, give it a shot. If you're interested in the game by itself, take the risk. It's a fan favorite to some, and a pointless game to others. Try it out, cause you'll either be drawn to it's oddly enjoyable nature, or waste a little bit of time testing the waters with a series that may get you pretty addicted. Don't let it be the only Harvest Moon game you try, but don't pass it up. It's got a nice charm that's very hard to explain.

Final Score: 7/10

Starbound First impression

Hello there readers! Yes, roughly two weeks ago The Starbound beta got released on the PC! For those who don't know, Starbound is a Space/Crafting/adventure action game, where you (the adventure of any six races) have decided to run away from your home planet, (or it gets destroyed by a big tentacle monster if you are a human. . . Seriously I am not kidding), and decide that the best course of action is to explore the big vast universe!

Now readers, let me make one thing very clear; This game is still in Beta, so anything I may mention in this blog may be changed before the full game is released.

If you readers have ever played Minecraft or Terraria, then you basically have a overall idea of what you do in the game. You collect/mine material from the ground and create items with them to make yourself stronger, (or create a super fancy house made out of alien tree), you battle random people, and even hunt wildlife for food. Pretty much open world crafting basics; however compared to Minecraft and Terraria, this one will have both Main and Side Quests (which are not yet fully released as of now, but will be added later on), and many different planets with randomized: Animals, enemies, loot, events, and dungeons. There are so many things that can be randomized that its next to impossible to play this game the same way (even on your 20th character). Sure the start may feel similar, but directly after you start exploring the universe, you will encounter new things or events. The game's random mechanic is just that ingenious!

The combat itself is pretty fun too. There is a wide variety of different melee and ranged weapons to choose from, you can equip for example a one handed sword, and have a shield or your flashlight on the other hand, or you can equip a two handed sniper rifle and defeat your enemies before they even reach you. In addition to these weapons, you can find legendary weapons that have extra cool features. For example, I found a two handed spear that shoot lighting balls, making it a melee/ranged weapon.

In this game you also have Survival mechanics. After some time your character starts to get hungry (yes even the robot race), and you have to start using hunter weapons like the: Hunter knife or the Bow. Then you need to create a camp fire and cook the meat. Compared to Minecraft, your character doesn't get hungry fast, which is a very nice thing in my opinion. This game also features a temperature mechanic, when you are on a ice planet, your temperature starts to lower, and if it gets to low you will die (if you don't of course have a campfire with you to put up every now and then, or have made some winter clothes out of leather). They are pretty cool features and add a fun realistic element to the game.

You also have a spaceship which you use to travel around the game world (although you can't bring it down to a planet's surface, but you can always as long as you are on the surface beam yourself to your ship). You can customize the place with furniture or other useful items you either find or craft yourself, but you can only beam to your ship if you are on the surface of the planet, not underground to dig for ore.

There is one thing that surprised me when I started playing this beta, it is surprisingly smooth, it rarely crashes, and you rarely find bugs or glitches, but the most surprising thing of them all, is that the multiplayer actually works right now! Yes the servers you create for your friends rarely crash, even if you have a bad internet!

Lastly the music in this game is beautifully composed by Curtis Schweitzer. A lot of the songs are atmospheric, using a lot of orchestral computer instruments and drums; however, many of the songs are quite catchy, and have a interesting melody to them. It is very well done, and it rarely gets old, and the best part is that you can buy the WHOLE soundtrack relatively cheap!

There is not really much more I can say until the game has been fully released, which will most likely be later next year. I could have talked about the races, but there is really not many big differences between them (yet), I will go into detail about them when I make a full review of this game when it gets out of its Beta. Here is the trailer for the Beta:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyMJE9ZHIqQ

If you liked what you read, then I highly recommend you readers to get this game, it costs only $13.99 on Steam or the official website: http://playstarbound.com/ When the game is fully released I will talk about it more.

That is all from me readers! Have a awesome day!

Tales of Zestiria Announced

A few months ago Namco Bandai's Tales of team announced that a new Tales of game was in the works. Although they did not go into the detail, they did state that it would be for 7th generation hardware. Nothing else was said, but a few weeks later trademarks were registered which hinted at what the next one would be called. Well, after a few month wait, Namco Bandai has finally made an official announcement.

The next entry in the Tales of series will be called "Tales of Zestiria" (which was one of the registered trademarks), and it will be PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Other than that, not much else is known about the game. We know that it will be in full 3D, it will have a wide verity of areas to explore, it will have a large focus on dragons, it will be more fantasy based, and a it will be released in the west; however, Namco Bandai has not released any "true" story or gameplay information. We do not know anything about the characters, what sort of adventure they will be involved in, and the information concerning the new battle system has been kept quiet as well. More news is sure to come in the near future, but in the mean time, all we can do is wait.

Welcome to Mii Verse Nintendo 3DS Owners!

Yesterday Nintendo finally took the next step forward and released Mii Verse on the Nintendo 3DS. After almost a year long wait, the online community and account system featured on the Wii U has finally made it to the 3DS. Owners of the Nintendo 3DS can now preform the latest system update which will add a brand new icon at the top right of the touch screen; this icon will allow users to access the Mii Verse community, create a log in ID (or link their 3DS to an existing Wii U log in ID), and it will also allow your 3DS eShop account to be linked with your ID (which in return will log your purchase history).

As of right now the Mii Verse feature is still limited. While on the Wii U you have access to a friends list where you can send private messages, the 3DS currently does not have any of these features. Sure you can follow other Mii Verse users for easy access to their posts, but you cannot actually put them on a "friends list." For now, the 3DS is continuing to use the Friend Code feature (which requires you and your friend to register each other's "friend code"), but that is sure to change in the future.

Nintendo still has quite a lot to get up and running if they want to fully integrate this feature with the 3DS, so it may be some time before it is working as it should.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Release Date Announced

Hideo Kojima has finally announced the release date for "Part 1" of Metal Gear Solid V, titled, "Ground Zeroes." As mentioned before, Ground Zeroes is the game which will lead players up to the main adventure of MGS5 "The Phantom Pain." Just like the main title, Ground Zeroes is a fully open world stealth game, but it is at a much smaller scale. Kojima himself said that the game's purpose was to slowly introduce players to the new style of play, so that they didn't feel completely lost once they were thrown into the main adventure. Up until now it hasn't been very clear just what Ground Zeroes would be, many speculated it would be a short intro chapter like the one seen in Metal Gear Solid 2, but it turns out that it will in fact be a "game of its own."

It turns out that Ground Zeroes will be a downloadable title for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. The Xbox 360 version and PS3 version will be $20, but the next gen versions (Xbox One and PlayStation 4) will be $30. Although each version of the game is technically the same, the "next gen" versions do feature increased graphics, and the Microsoft releases include an extra mission as well. In this extra mission, you play as Cyborg Ninja Raiden who has somehow jumped into the past. Although it isn't clear if they'll somehow work this into the story or not, the trailer (as seen below) implies that it is just a cameo mission with no relation to the actual plot.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be released on March 18, 2014. For more information, check out the brand new "Microsoft Exclusive" trailer.

NGR Update

Hello everyone, and welcome to Netto's Game Room. Today we are happy to announce that we here at NGR are finally taking our first steps forward toward a major revision of NGR as you know it. Yesterday we made a post on the forums which discussed some minor changes with the social aspects of the website, but today I would like to go into a little bit more detail about our future plans. Now before I go on, let me remind you that this change is still work in progress, and I cannot go into too great of detail because of that.

Since the moment Netto's Game Room opened outside of its original home, we have been using a lot of "default" settings. When we decided to use the Blogger software to run the blog, we also decided to use one of the default templates provided to us. This template is known as "Awesome Inc," and it is one which anyone using Blogger is free to use. We felt that it was a nice template that would suit our needs, and after changing it up a bit, we were able to turn it into something that we felt was right.

Up until now, this template has served us well. It is a nice simple template which lets us do everything we need, but something about it just feels wrong. We broke away from our original home at Capcom-Unity to become something of our own, and although we managed to do so; we are still limited on what we can do with our blogs design. We have to stay within the settings Awesome Inc has defined for us, and because of that we do not have true freedom. This is why we have decided to take this next step.

In the coming weeks or so, Netto's Game Room will be redesigned. We will still continue to operate just as we always have, but our look and feel will be completely different. We will have a new banner to replace our current "place holder," the template we use will have been built from scratch specifically for Netto's Game Room, and we may have some major changes to our navigation and other functions as well.

Currently this revamp is still in the planing stages, but we will be slowly introducing new aspects as time goes on. Yesterday we took the first step toward changing our social aspects, but this is just one of the minor changes we needed to take to push this update into full swing.

As of right now, this update only applies to the main page of Netto's Game Room. While the forums, and Tumblr page, may receive overhauls in the future; they currently are not a part of this revision. For more information, please check back soon.

The Retro Goat Reviews- Super Castlevania IV

Super Castlevania IV is a 2D action-platformer, the fourth home console released game of the franchise, and the eighth game total. It was the first Castlevania game on the Super Nintendo, as well as the first to incorporate a variety of new elements. It's a pretty innovative game, and many of the changes work in it's favor.

Story- 7/10
Super Castlevania IV is essentially a remake of the first game, with the plot largely unchanged. You are once again Simon Belmont, hunting down the mighty Dracula and killing any minion of his that stands in your way. If it isn't broken, don't fix it, though this is the time where story in gaming was starting to become a bigger deal. This game gets a pass due to it's remake status, but I do wish they did a bit more to add on to the experience. It's not bad by any means, it's just the only part of the game that isn't particularly innovative.

Gameplay- 9/10
The game is back to being about one player, so there isn't a variety of new characters to play as. So they did the most logical thing and made Simon Belmont into an incredible character. He controls better, he's slightly more detailed, and you feel like you are truly in control of him. Many of the changes are towards the controls, so the gameplay is still largely unaltered. You're essentially traveling to the castle to fight Dracula again. If you played the first game, you'll get a feeling that you've done this before. The levels have been altered to create a more unique experience though, and it's one of those games you'll find yourself playing through a variety of times, just due to the fact that it's extremely fun.

Controls 10/10
I wanted to separate this from the gameplay, simply due to how amazing this games controls are. You are finally able to swing the whip any way you need, and you can control your jumps nicely as well. With the changes made to the controls, the games difficulty is much more of a fair challenge than previous installments. This is also the first Castlevania game with a blocking ability of some sorts, thanks to how you can control the whip. The control is amazing, and it really makes the game go from great to classic. There's virtually nothing to change about the control. I do want to add though, with the whip being so heavily improved upon, as well as being able to strike in any direction, it renders the Ax sub-weapon useless, as the whip can do anything the Ax can do, with the space being available for a more useful power up. Again though, not a bad thing. The improvements really do make the game so much more enjoyable, and more accessible to gamers.

Difficulty- 8/10
Just cause the controls are improved upon does not mean that this is an easy game by any means. It simply means the challenge is generally more fair, but it is still a brutal game. Trial and error is clear here, and you will likely feel starved for health items at times, especially towards the end of the game. An experienced gamer will likely have little trouble with the first few levels, but the difficulty spike is apparent. Twice. Once for when you realize the game isn't going easy on you anymore, and once when you realize the game does not want you to beat it. The game is entirely beatable, but it's definitely a challenge to get to the ending. The most notable time when the difficulty is at it's hardest is once you're in the castle. There you'll notice you dying a good number of times due to the massive difficulty spike between "hard" and "holy crap how will I beat this" but like any good game, it frustrates you just enough so that you're focused and trying your hardest, but not so frustrated that you'll give up. It's a challenge that's worth trying to defeat, and it's more much of a fair fight than with previous games. The deaths generally aren't cheap (keyword being generally) and with a good amount of practice you will be able to overcome it.

Graphics- 9/10
The graphics are amazing, and really show off what the Super Nintendo is capable of doing. I do want to address my only complaint about the graphics immediately though, and that's the fact that Simon has no face. It's a bit distracting, and I'm not sure why they couldn't give him any facial features. It's kind of creepy, but not like that one little thing will really affect the overall gameplay experience. Besides that, the graphics are absolutely incredible, and really set the bar for future Super Nintendo games. The key aspect they use to make the graphics seem incredible is simply perspective. How they manipulate the background gives a 3D feel in certain levels, how they use subtleties to make the game feel more like an experience that you're absolutely engrossed in, it's incredible. The graphics really go above and beyond to make the game feel even more incredible, and the work put into them shows.

Sound- 10/10
The games soundtrack really is spectacular as well, and the soundtrack is strangely a focal point in helping to make sure any frustration in later stages not reach the point where you turn the game off. In the later stages, the game uses the themes from the previous titles to create a bit of a nostalgic feeling while you play through the castle. Fitting, since this is a remake, and it's simply enjoyable as well. As for the original songs, they're also very nicely done, and they set the mood in the game wonderfully. There's really nothing to complain about, they don't get repetitive, they add to the overall experience, and they are enjoyable by themselves on a soundtrack. As for the in-game sound effects, they're nicely done as well. Apparently the North American version of the game had altered sound effects to make the whip sound less like a chain whip would, but it still doesn't sound bad at all, and the upgrade sound effects for whenever you get the better whips seriously makes you feel more powerful. Overall, the sound for the game is an underrated classic, and it deserves to be recognized for it's amazing soundtrack in addition to it's stellar gameplay.

Buy It?
If you don't like a challenge, then this is absolutely not the game for you. This is by no means an easy game, and a game of this difficulty is not for everyone. However, this game is a classic, and anyone who wants to test their skills would greatly enjoy this game. If you want to try to beat it, it isn't impossible by any means. If you enjoy challenging games, then this is a great one to play, so I'd say buy it.

Overall Super Castlevania IV is an incredible game, and is rightfully remembered as a classic on the Super Nintendo. It's difficult, but fair, and it feels more like an experience than simply a game. While the fact that it is easier may be off putting to some fans, the difficulty only dropped due to improvements in the overall games design and controls. There's nothing wrong with improving something, as this is an incredible classic and a must-play for anyone who likes a vintage challenge.

Steam Virus warning!

Hello there readers.

If two people by name of NisseFar and Nivek want to add you to their friend list,  DO NOT ACCEPT! It is a virus! Pass this message on to everyone on your friends list.. It is a hard drive killer, and a very horrible virus. Please let everyone know.

This virus has seriously damaged over 2000 computers already; however, you will be fine as long as you and your friends don't add these people to your friend list.

Have a nice day readers.

Update by NettoSaito:

Hello everyone, I just wanted you all to know that I personally looked into the matter. This virus strain is actually very similar to the ones that used to be popular on instant messengers such as MSN. When it came to such chat programs, the virus you added to your contact list would often either open your share folder and add the files, send you a download invite, or link you to a website. Considering Steam does not have access to the same file sharing services as such chat programs, this virus is limited on what it can do.

Upon being added by the above contacts, you will be linked to a webpage which will load up a Java based app. As long as you do not open a link to this website, you will be fine. Another alternative would be to uninstall Java or block all Java with your web browser, but these options would be going a bit overboard.

Just remember to play it safe.

Battlefield 4 PS4 Patch Pushed Back

Last week DICE announced that the PlayStation 4 version of Battlefield 4 would be getting a major patch. This patch was said to fix major issues with the PS4 version which made some sections of the game "unplayable," and others just flat out "unfair." From random crashes, to bullets doing incorrect amounts of damage, the patch was going to fix it all (or at least the majority of the issues), and make the game what it should have been at launch. Well, that patch has now been pushed back.

According to a post on their official forums, "the PS4 game update that was originally meant to go live Dec 3 is undergoing some additional testing and will be rescheduled for a later date. [We] will get back with final details as soon as we have verification that the update is good to go."

With that being said, no other information has been released concerning this issue. On the plus side the first DLC pack "China Rising" (which can be downloaded for free thanks to a voucher included with the physical copy) was released today. This DLC features new areas and vehicles, as well as a set of brand new trophies. At least there's some good news!

Youtube App Now Downloadable for the 3DS.

To all 3DS owners: Youtube is now officially for download!
The long awaited Youtube app is now finally here. 3DS owners have been clamoring for the ability to watch Youtube on their 3DS' and now it's officially been released.

To make a good thing great: it's free. Totally completely 100% free. All it takes is 111 blocks of save data, no bigger than two or three downloaded Game Boy games, and a compatible SD Card. Thankfully all 3DS systems come with compatible SD Cards, so any player who hasn't changed their cards is able to download it. If you have changed your card, then it may unfortunately be incompatible with the new Youtube app, but try it out first.

With the Youtube app, all Youtube videos compatible for the latest game systems can now be viewed on the 3DS. That does mean that they're might be some videos that do not work,  the ones that are incompatible with mobile devices, but a majority of videos work just fine.

Have fun enjoying Youtube on the 3DS!

NGR Holiday Gift Guide - 2013

It is that time of year again! Christmas is just around the corner, and many of you may be wondering just what to buy your game loving loved ones. Well, look no farther. Here is a quick shopping guide which may just help you decide what to get them. For the following guide is broken down into sections, and we will also explain which age groups they will most appeal to. Just keep in mind that while shopping for younger kids, you always want to check the age rating to see which games are appropriate for them. It is up to you, the parent, to decide of your kids should play the game; so just use your best judgement. Now, with that being said, let us get on with the shopping guide.

Video Game Consoles:

This year there are quite a lot of choices when it comes to buying console for your loved one. Each console has its own pros and cons, but here's a generalization for each one of them.

Nintendo 3DS/2DS -

At this point in time, the Nintendo DS' life has come to an end. Most video game developers have moved onto making games for the newer Nintendo 3DS. Because of this fact alone, there is really no reason to pick up a Nintendo DS, DS Lite, or DSi at this time; they are all outdated consoles, and would be a waste of money.

The Nintendo 3DS is Nintendo's newest handheld, and it has a wide verity of features not seen in the Nintendo DS. It is a much stronger console (which allows it to play much larger games with better graphics), it has a much better online system, it features a full online shop which allows you to buy digital games rather than just buying hard copies, it has a glasses free 3D effect, and it even plays all Nintendo DS games (minus the very few rare DS games which required accessories, such as the many years old Guitar Hero). It is basically two consoles in one, but it also has access to older games such as NES games and Game Boy games via the online store.

Overall, the Nintendo 3DS is a great gift for kids, and older gamers alike. For the kids and older gamers alike, the console has a wide verity of family friendly games which they are sure to enjoy (such as Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, The Legend of Zelda, Starfox 64, Pokemon X and Y, Animal Crossing, etc), and for the teens and mature players it has some major titles they will not want to miss out on (Fire Emblem, Resident Evil, Rune Factory, etc).

Really it doesn't matter how old you are, or if you are a gamer or not; the Nintendo 3DS is a must have handheld console, and it is filled with great games for everyone. Even those who have never played a game in their life will find at least one enjoyable game or two on this console.

As of right now, the 3DS comes in three models. You have the standard Nintendo 3DS for $169.99, a larger XL version for $199.99, and a brand new model called the "2DS" which is a smaller version of the 3DS without the 3D effect. This version only costs $99.99, and is perfect for younger players (under the age of 7) who cannot use the 3D effect. (Note: Prices may vary.)

PlayStation Vita -

Another handheld console, but this time it is one from Sony. Overall the Vita has had quite the rocky start, and it still does not have as many games at the Nintendo 3DS, but that does not make it a bad console. Although you may not see it in stores, the PlayStation Vita actually does have a wide verity of games, but most of them are digital download only; however most of these are aimed at older gamers.

The PlayStation Vita itself has access to hundreds of games. It can download older PlayStation One titles, it has access to a large library of PlayStation Portable games, it has PlayStation Network exclusive downloads, and it has a library of its own as well. Considering most of these games are rated either T or M, the PlayStation Vita really isn't a console you'll want to buy for a younger gamer, but it does have a few titles they may enjoy (such as LittleBigPlanet); however, for the most part the Vita is better left as a gift for the mature audience. Games such as Killzone, Virtue's Last Reward, Gravity Rush, Metal Gear Solid, Ninja Gaiden, The Walking Dead, Ragnarok, and Uncharted are what make the Vita worth owning, and chances are the younger audience will not be able to enjoy them.

On another note, the Vita also acts as a type of tablet as well. Besides just playing games, the Vita has access to a wide verity of apps. From Netflix and YouTube, to photo sharing apps such as Flickr, the Vita serves also as a media center, and can be used as one if you wish.

Another reason to think about buying a PlayStation Vita is if your loved one has a PlayStation 4. Most PlayStation 4 games make use of the Vita's "Remote Play" feature, which allows you to play games off of the TV screen, and on your handheld. This will prevent others from tying up the TV when you want to watch a TV show or movie; instead they can simply transfer the game to their Vita, and play without disturbing anyone. On top of that, the Vita has other connections with the PS4 as well, such as the ability to use the party feature to voice chat with friends and family members.

Wii U -

Nintendo's newest console. This console hit shelves late last year, and was one of the larger Christmas items on the list for a lot of gamers last year; however, sadly the console still hasn't taken off. Truthfully, the Wii U is lacking on games, and it will be quite some time before it really picks up. While it does have some great family games such as New Super Mario Bros U, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Scribblenauts, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Lego City, and party games like Wii Party U, that is really all the system has to offer at this moment.

A lot of the major Wii U titles will not be released until much later next year, and even into early 2015. The Wii U does have a virtual console service where you can download older games from the NES, SNES, etc, but older games can only carry a console so far; especially considering the much cheaper, and older, Wii also has access to many of these very same games. Now, the Wii U does double as a Wii as well, but by now most already own a Wii so this is not a reason to want to buy the console.

When it comes to the older gamers, the Wii U does have quite a few of the major titles as well; however these are not system sellers at all. Sure you can play games like the newly released Assassin's Creed IV, or Call of Duty on the Wii U, but these very same games are on other consoles as well; ones the gamer may already own. Some of these games, such as Assassin's Creed, are also on the other "Next Gen" consoles such as the Xbox One, and PlayStation 4; where some would argue they are much better. Due to the Wii U's hardware limitations, Assassin's Creed IV is actually missing content (DLC), and will always be behind the other versions of the game as a result.

Overall, at this time the Wii U is not worth owning, unless you are really looking forward to future releases (such as Super Smash Bros).

PlayStation 4 -

The PlayStation 4 is the newest console released by Sony, and it is one of the "next generation" consoles to hit the market this year. The console is a major improvement over its predecessor (the PlayStation 3), and because of that it is no longer held back by as many limitations. PlayStation 4 games take console gaming to new heights, and there really is no reason to skip out on it if your loved one is a console gamer. This is one of the two "must have" consoles to choose from, and it will not disappoint. Although the console only has a handful of games at this moment, a lot more will be released in the coming months; and it appeals to both the young and old alike. While kids can enjoy games like Knack, the mature audience will be able to dive right into some of the top games to be released this year; including games like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed IV, and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Xbox One -

The other "must have" console to come out this year. The Xbox One is the next in line console, after the Xbox 360, and it too takes a major jump forward. Although the console is a bit "weaker" than the PlayStation 4, that really should not be a deciding factor. The Xbox One features a lot of the same great "must have" titles (Dead Rising 3, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, etc), and it also acts as a full fledged media center. Overall the console is aimed more toward the older audience at this time, but in the future more kid friendly games will be on the shelves. If your loved one is a Xbox fan, then this really should be your console of choice.
