The Forza Series Takes a Hit as Turn 10 Studio is Dismantled, Forza Motorsport is Over

Fred Russell of Turn 10 Studio has taken to Facebook to officially announce that the studio is no more, and Forza Motorsport is now over.

Turn 10 Studio is yet another impacted by Microsoft's recent layoffs. They developed and released the first Forza Motorsport back in 2005 on the original Xbox, with the most recent title launching for the Xbox Series X|S back in 2023. They worked alongside Playground Games, the development team responsible for the Forza Horizon series, and previously contained staff who helped publish Microsoft's retired racing series Project Gotham Racing.

As of the time of this writing, Forza Horizon itself is still in the clear, with the series currently going even stronger than ever. With its recent release on PlayStation 5, many fans continue to enjoy the game each day, and events are currently in rotation.

What is the difference between Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon?

For those wondering what the difference is between the two parts of the Forza series, it is pretty simple.

Forza Motorsport is focused on real world track racing, and features a mix between arcade gameplay and full on racing sim features. The races, handling, and nearly everything about it can be customized to be as realistic or as arcady as one wishes, and there is also a rewind feature that can be used if you mess up. A lot of care went into developing these games, and they can appeal to a wide range of racing fans.

Forza Horizon on the other hand is focused on car culture, and simply having fun. These are open world racing games where the thrill of driving and exploration is put front and center. Every little thing you do rewards you, and there are tons of customization options across the entire game. From creating your own events, to fully decking out your car, the game's content is in your own hands. All of this comes with the solid driving experience from the Motorsport series, making Horizon easily one of the top racing games on the market.

That being said, the two parts of the series offer different experiences for different types of fans, so the removal of one half of it is sure to be bad news for those who enjoy the real world racing focus in Motorsport.

  1. I personally loved both sides of Forza, and I'm really sad to hear this news. Forza Motorsport helped me get through a tough time in my life when dealing with a medial scare, so I'm always going to be thankful for it being there for me... I'll keep playing Horizon of course, but it's just weird to think Motorsport may never return.

  2. I reported bugs on day 1 of FM23 (actually day -5 with the early access package) and they remain unfixed to this day. I still love parts of the game, but it was inarguably the worst Forza Motorsport title. The fact its the best simcade racer on PC says far more about its competition than this game.

The team was incompetent, made a game thats a shell of the franchise that came before it, and since launch theyve added a few new cars and tracks and fixed none of its issues. Actually, removing car XP made it worse IMO. So this was predictable, unfortunately.
