Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is here, and players are now hard at work creating their own Mii characters, pets, food, objects and more; however, this freedom came at a cost.
With so much customization allowed, Nintendo has made the decision not to allow players to share their creations online, including screenshots and videos. However, not everything is as locked down as one might initially believe.
Although players cannot share their created objects or patterns—outside of posting screenshots of the pattern designer—it is actually possible to download and share Mii characters. The only downside is that it requires a few extra steps and an additional free download to do so, along with some restrictions.
Miitopia is a title previously released by Nintendo that makes use of Mii characters. Similar to Tomodachi Life, the game includes an in-depth character creator which allows players to make nearly anything they want. From famous people to fictional characters or completely original creations, there isn't really a limit outside of your own imagination. With so many creative people in the world, the result is that nearly anything you can think of has been added to the game, and thankfully, these can be shared online with the use of a code.
While the full game offers more functions, the free Miitopia demo can still be used to search for and download other player-created Miis, which can in turn be brought into Tomodachi Life as well.
Step 1: Download Miitopia Demo
To begin, simply look for the Miitopia demo on the Nintendo eShop. Again, there are some limitations with this, so those who purchase the game—or already own it—will have access to more features. Any Mii using content unlocked from the main game will not be downloadable, but the vast majority of Miis will still be usable without spending a dime.
Step 2: Start a New Game
Simply go through the initial setup of creating a Mii and starting a new game. You do not actually need to play anything, but rather, get your save file started. That's it.
Step 3: Click Mii Characters
From the main menu select the Mii Option to open up your own list of Miis, which should only have one at this point.
Step 4: Select "Add Mii Characters"
Within this menu, selecting the Add Mii Character option will allow you to, well, add Mii Characters. Upon selecting this, a new dialogue option will appear where one can choose the "Access Key" option.
Step 5: Find Access Keys Online
This step requires your own research, but websites such as Miipedia have plenty to search through. However, many have been removed over the years, so Reddit User YangBangUltra has put together a list of working codes to make your life even easier!
Once you find something that is interesting, simply enter the key into Miitopia, and navigate to the Mii you'd like to save. Keys bring you to the user's page and not the individual Mii, so a single code will have many to choose from.
Step 6: Copy to Switch
After finding a Mii you like, select it and use the "Copy to Nintendo Switch" option to save it to your physical system. It is important to note, however, that face customizations that use the makeup option or accessories will not transfer. The Switch will save all other features, but anything more in-depth will need to be re-added manually—so take a screenshot for reference.
Step 7: Copy into Tomodachi Life
The final step is to use the Add Mii option within Tomodachi Life, and rather than using the "From Scratch" option, select from Switch Console instead. This will bring up a list of all Miis saved on the Switch itself, and you can then finish importing them into the game.
From here all the standard options will be available, and players can fine tune the Miis to fit their own preferences.
Step 8: Have fun!
And that's it! If everything went smoothly, you can now welcome your new Mii to the island, and let the craziness begin.
Sadly you cannot save your Tomodachi Life Mii characters back to your Switch console, so those hoping to share their own using this method would need to recreate them within Miitopia.
