Today's game on display from our physical collection is Mirror's Edge for the Xbox 360!
Mirror's Edge was a game unlike anything I had seen before. It launched during my early days of owning an Xbox 360, and I still remember the first time I heard it being brought up. I was playing Halo 3 online with a friend when he suddenly mentioned a new game demo he had been playing for a first-person platforming title. From the way he described stringing together crazy parkour moves, I knew I had to check it out. At the time, I was just about to finish high school and had little else to spend my money on besides video games—so I made it a habit to go to Walmart after each paycheck just to try out something new. When Mirror's Edge finally appeared on the shelf one weekend, I knew it would be my new "game of the week," but this time, I wouldn't be alone for the ride.
Mirror's Edge and Pizza Night
That weekend, my friend Ryan was free—he usually worked at a local store on Saturdays—and when he stopped by my house, I knew I had to show him Mirror's Edge as well. So that night, the two of us sat on the floor in front of my TV, ordered a pizza, and basically played it through to completion in one go. Just as my other friend had described, it was completely insane, and I never wanted it to end. Although the game featured weapons, its main focus was on outrunning fights rather than engaging, and the sheer amount of movement options let you get creative. From jumping off walls to sliding down rooftops, and then leaping off to swing from railings before rolling to safety, it was a heart-pounding experience, to say the least. It didn't take long for me to realize it was going to be one of my new all-time favorites. Even months later, Mirror's Edge was one of the games I showed to friends and family who attended my graduation party! It had that big of an impact on me, and even the main theme song, "Still Alive," continues to live on in my head rent-free.
While Mirror's Edge might not be for everyone, it is something gamers should experience at least once in their life.
