The Game Room Collection: Doctor Lautrec and the Forbidden Knights

Today's game on display from our physical collection is Doctor Lautrec and the Forbidden Knights for the Nintendo 3DS!

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights is an intriguing Nintendo 3DS title that often goes overlooked. Developed by Konami, it was heavily inspired by Level-5's Professor Layton series, but it also takes the formula in a distinct direction.

While it is a puzzle-adventure game with a visual style reminiscent of Layton, its puzzles are often set within dungeons and feature turn-based grid battles with RPG mechanics.

Deceptive Difficulty and Strategic Combat

These battles are where the game's higher difficulty comes into play, as a single wrong move can spell defeat. While combat looks deceptively simple at first glance, it requires careful planning and strategic resource management to weaken enemies before capturing them.

The game does little to guide you through these sections, and the difficulty ramps up quite early in the experience. Once you get the hang of the mechanics, it isn't too overwhelming, but there is definitely a steep learning curve.

In addition to the combat, the game does feature a map of Paris to explore, which I always thought was a nice little touch.

Discovering a Niche 3DS Title

I personally added Doctor Lautrec to my collection after discovering it on sale alongside a few other DS and 3DS games, figure-ing it was worth a shot! There was very little information about the title online at the time, and I was hoping it would turn out to be a hidden gem.

While it wasn't quite the exact game I was expecting, I still enjoyed my time with it. It remains one of the few 3DS titles in my library that completely confuses fellow gamers whenever I bring it up!
