The Game Room Collection: Titanfall 2

Today's game on display from our physical collection is Titanfall 2 for the PlayStation 4!

Titanfall 2 was a surprising find for me. The game launched in October 2016, and although I was interested in the title, other releases demanded my time—and money—instead. So, when Black Friday arrived a month later and I was hunting for smaller deals, I never expected it to be the game I'd stumble across.

A Lucky Black Friday Discovery

I still remember walking down the paper towel aisle at Walmart when a flash of blue caught my eye out of the corner of my vision. It was tucked away on the back of a shelf, hidden behind paper plates and other supplies. I reached back to see what it was and pulled out a copy of Titanfall 2 with a Black Friday sale sticker on the front. I wasn't sure if the price tag was accurate, but when I brought it to the register, I discovered that this brand-new $60 release was scanning for just $10. To this day, I'm not sure if it was a pricing error, but I walked out of that store with the deal of a lifetime and went straight home to enjoy my new game.

A High-Speed Action Platformer in Disguise

Although I rarely bring it up, Titanfall 2 was an absolute blast. On the surface, it presents itself as a first-person shooter, but in reality, it plays like a high-speed action platformer where the goal is to pull off wild stunts and take down enemies in style. It feels like a classic 2D platformer in the vein of Mega Man X, but fully translated into a first-person perspective.

Having a mech as a partner was a highlight as well, leading to creative and distinct gameplay sequences. Even while fighting on foot, the campaign delivered an incredible experience. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and I was staring at the credits in what felt like the blink of an eye.

A Lasting Impact

Hopefully, Titanfall 3 will become a reality someday, but until then, Titanfall 2 holds up remarkably well. It is one of those rare first-person shooters that I can easily recommend even to non-shooter fans, making it a great title to revisit whenever the mood strikes. That copy I pulled from a random Walmart shelf almost ten years ago remains on display, and finding it is still one of my favorite Black Friday memories.
