How Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Work on Switch 2, and the Options Available

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are two games that are playable on the Switch 2, and they both have multiple ways to play them.

Some players may be wondering how both of these games will work, so to avoid any confusion, we are going to quickly go through the options available.

Option 1: Playing the Switch Release

Those who do not care about anything extra can simply play the games as is. Either insert your physical game card or download your digital copy, and you will be able to play either game as they were on the Switch. The Switch 2 is backwards compatible with nearly every original Switch game, and of course that includes both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Option 2: Upgrade for $10

The second option for Switch 2 owners is to upgrade to the Switch 2 edition of both games. This upgrade costs $9.99, and can be applied to both the physical and digital versions of each. Upgrading to the Switch 2 offers smoother framerates, faster loading times, and enhanced resolution and textures; it also allows users to use the new Zelda Notes App, which acts as a guide right from your smart phone.

Option 3: Free Upgrade with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Players who subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will be able to download the Switch 2 upgrades at no additional cost. This works similar to other + Expansion Pack membership bonuses, and will only be active while users are subscribed to the service. The moment a subscription ends, the upgrade will no longer work, and players will be reverted back to the original Switch versions of the games. They can then either resubscribe to the service, or purchase the upgrade for $9.99 if they wish to upgrade back to the Switch 2 versions.

Option 4: Purchase The Switch 2 Editions

The final option is to flat out purchase the Switch 2 Editions of each game. These versions retail for $10 more than the original Switch alternatives, meaning the pricing is the same no matter if you buy the Switch 2 versions outright, or spend the extra $10 to upgrade the Switch releases.

And there you have it; all four options for purchasing and playing both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
