Nintendo Releases Controversial Update for Mario Kart World

Nintendo
has released a brand new update for Mario Kart World that many fans will not be happy with.

Update 1.1.2 makes a key change to the online mode in Mario Kart World, or more specifically, to the way courses are selected between races.

Previously when racing online a few tracks were displayed, and players could then vote on which one they wanted to play. This is similar to how past titles in the series handled the selection, with each voted for track then being chosen at random. The difference with World however, is the fact that the chosen stage will include the "in-between" areas to reach it, followed by one lap on the stage itself. This means voted for stages will not include three laps on the selected destination, and will not provide the "classic" Mario Kart experience.

To make up for this, players can select "Random" which will drop them into a completely random race from anywhere on the map. These random races will be the full three lap circuit races fans have come to know and love, and will not include the in-between paths that World puts a large focus on. It might not be a perfect solution for those simply wanting classic Mario Kart gameplay, but it has worked for the time being.

Well with update 1.1.2 this is no longer fully the case, as the displayed (non-random) tracks will now be put in that random pool as well. In other words, those selecting random in hopes of getting a standard race, now have a much higher chance of being thrown into one of the displayed tracks instead; the very same ones that include the in-between paths.

Previously we gave Mario Kart World our "Essential" review rating, keeping in mind the way the "Random" option was setup. It allowed players to experience both the new and old style of gameplay, and we liked how both options were available. With the current state of the online mode, making this change is sure to anger some fans, as random has become the go-to for many. A lot of players enjoy the classic experience and simply want to race around the full version of tracks. Random previously allowed them to do this, and that is exactly why most players selected it as an option; something that will no longer fully work for them.

Will Nintendo go back on this decision? Only time will tell.
