Discord Alternative 'Root' Allows Users to Import Discord Servers and More

With Discord facing backlash for its recent decision to enforce Age Verification, many users are now looking for alternatives. While there are many out there, one newly released option is Root; a service that allows users to import their existing Discord Servers.

While Root offers a similar experience to Discord, complete with custom servers—text channels, voice channels, custom roles, etc,—it also has an additional Task Manager feature which allows for improved coordination between teams.

Currently we here at Netto's Game Room plan to continue operating our Discord Server, but Root is one of the many services we are considering as a replacement. Using the Template Import feature we were able to duplicate our server without difficulties, but pinned messages needed to be transferred manually. Outside of this, all of the main channels and descriptions carried over as a part of the process, making setup quick and easy.

We felt we should at least inform other Discord users of this alternative option, even if we ourselves do not make a full switch.

How To Import to Root:

To begin the import process, simply open your Discord Server settings, and navigate to "Server Template." Here you can generate a link, which you can then copy and paste into Root when creating a new server.

When doing so, the following settings will be brought over:

  • Channels and channel topics
  • Roles and permissions
  • Default server settings

What will not be brought over:

  • Messages
  • Members or Bots
  • Server Icons
  • Boosts and Perks

Depending on how large your server is it may take a few moments to transfer; however, in our case it only took a few seconds.

One minor issue: It should be noted that Root does not allow multiple spaces in group names. If a group contains more than one space, it will not be imported properly based on our testing. (We could not use The Game Room as a name.) You can avoid this problem by renaming your groups before attempting to import, or simply recreate the groups after the import is complete. Thankfully channel names are not impacted, as they use a dash and not spaces.

Here is a quick comparison of our own server when imported into Root.

The Netto's Game Room Discord Server:

Root Server Moments After Creation:

Outside of one of our groups containing multiple spaces—we simply fixed this manually—everything transferred as expected. This included over 40 server roles we've created for member rankings, and their settings. Every server is going to be different, but in our case the role transfer would've been our biggest headache, and Root allowed us to avoid it.

Of course this same Template Link can be used to create new Discord Servers as well—which is the intended purpose of Discord Templates—but Root takes advantage of this to make migration easier.

Download Root:

Root is available to download on both PC and Mobile Devices, and it is completely free for anyone who'd like to test it out for themselves. It was recently released to the public, making it one of the newer contenders as a Discord alternative. Because of this, there is no denying that the app is missing some features Discord users have grown accustomed to, but all the main functionalities are here. While the mobile app doesn't have quite as many bells and whistles yet, that is surely something that will change over time.

  1. I don’t trust any platform asking for biometric data anymore. Gather doesn’t do that and still manages to have active communities, which is kind of rare these days.

  2. "Using the Template Import feature we were able to duplicate our server, but it is not available to the public."
Kind of contradicts the title of the article.

    1. Sorry for the confusion, the Template Import option can be used by everyone—our Netto's Game Room server isn't available to the public, as we plan to continue using Discord for the time being. Even so, we were able to bring everything over without issues, so we're free to open a Root server at any time!
