The Game Room Collection: Battlefield Bad Company

Today's game on display from our physical collection is Battlefield: Bad Company for the Xbox 360!

The Battlefield series used to be foreign to me. I'd play it at my friend Keith's house, and I remember other kids talking about it at school, but it was something I had no way of owning. Back in the early 2000s, I didn't have a gaming PC, and the only internet access I had was when visiting my grandparents. So, even if I had somehow convinced my parents to buy me a war game, I wouldn't have had a way to play it. But then that all changed when I bought an Xbox 360 with the money I had saved from my first part-time job.

An Unexpected Recommendation

Surprisingly, Battlefield: Bad Company is a game my dad pointed out to me. He'd see the grenade with a smiley-face pin on the box art, and he'd always laugh at it. So, one day when he mentioned it again, I decided to pull the trigger and buy it. I didn't know much about it at the time, but I obviously recognized the Battlefield name, and I had the cash to spare—a perk of being a senior in high school without a care in the world. When I got home from our Walmart trip that night, I popped the game in and instantly jumped into the campaign, where I was greeted with what is possibly one of my favorite shooter campaigns to date.

A Battlefield Comedy

What makes Bad Company so unique within Battlefield is the fact that the entire game is a comedy. Yes, it features the large, open maps Battlefield is known for, and the environment is destructible, but its story focusing on a squad of rejects is what truly made it shine. This is a rare case where I spent nearly the entire runtime laughing, never knowing what to expect next. By the time the credits rolled, I didn't want to say goodbye to these characters, and I couldn't wait to see what would come next. Thankfully, that was the outstanding Bad Company 2, but that's a story for another time.

A Classic

Sadly, the original Bad Company remains locked to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, meaning gamers today don't have an easy way to access it. However, it is definitely a title worth going out of your way to try. It has some rough edges, sure, but it is a rarity within its genre and an experience players won't forget.
