Today's game on display from our physical collection is Metal Gear solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PlayStation 3!
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was the original conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series. It was a flagship title for the PlayStation 3, and as a long-standing console exclusive, it was a major "system seller" for many fans.
The Grand Conclusion of Solid Snake's Journey
The game featured Solid Snake in a rapidly aging state and served as the culmination of the entire series. It addressed plot points dating back to the original Metal Gear on MSX2 while answering lingering questions left behind by Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and the prequel, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Taking full advantage of the PS3's hardware, it elevated the franchise both visually and atmospherically with enhanced cutscenes, expanded stealth mechanics, and refined third-person shooting controls. While the narrative-heavy experience didn't click for everyone—especially given the sheer length of its cutscenes—it remained a grand send-off for the franchise.
My Entry into the Series
As for me, I actually played through the entire franchise just to experience Metal Gear Solid 4. While I was familiar with the series thanks to my friend Ryan, it wasn't something I originally planned to dive into. However, when I was in college and finally bought a PlayStation 3, I decided to make the most of it by focusing heavily on its exclusive lineup.
Rather than jumping in headfirst with MGS4, I headed back to GameStop, picked up Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and Metal Gear Solid 2, read up on the original 2D releases, and borrowed Metal Gear Solid 3 from Ryan. The next few weeks were a wild ride through the whole saga, culminating in MGS4.
While it isn't my favorite entry in the franchise, I loved it for what it achieved, and I look forward to revisiting it on modern platforms.
