Today's game on display from our physical collection is Sonic Colors for the Nintendo DS!
Sonic Colors is a mainline entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series that many fans are familiar with. Originally released as a Nintendo Wii exclusive, it built upon the Wii and PlayStation 2 versions of Sonic Unleashed, was the first title to feature the current voice cast, and introduced the alien Wisps alongside their unique powers. While the 3D platforming console version eventually received a remaster for modern hardware, the Nintendo DS version has seemingly gone forgotten.
Despite sharing the name and aesthetic, the DS release is actually a direct follow-up to Sonic Rush Adventure, utilizing that game's side-scrolling style—with the addition of Wisp power-ups, of course.
High-Speed Boost Gameplay
I too was guilty of passing up the title when it first launched, falling into the mindset of "If I have the console version, why do I need it on handheld?" The answer turned out to be simple: because it's a blast to play! The high-speed boost platforming, paired with an expanded story featuring Sonic's friends—I especially loved the nod to Silver and Blaze's relationship from the Sonic '06 timeline—results in a unique experience distinct from the Wii release that is well worth your time.
An Unexpected Favorite
As for how I finally checked it out? It happened simply because I was at Walmart picking out a birthday cake with my mom and saw the game on sale. It was a sweet little extra gift she grabbed for me when she noticed me looking at it, and I spent the rest of the night playing it. I never expected much going in, but it honestly became one of my favorite gifts.
