As you sat there, buzzing with excitement for the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond reveal, a peculiar figure suddenly appeared on screen. You heard some fans in the crowd erupt with excitement, but you were left wondering, "Who is that?
Well, that is what we're going to discuss today! This is a brief history on the character known as "Sylux."
Who is Sylux?
Sylux, a character first introduced in Metroid Prime Hunters, is one of the many rival bounty hunters Samus faces in the game's story. Very little is known about his background—we don't even know his species!—but one thing is very clear: he has a deep hatred for the Galactic Federation. He has even killed Federation soldiers and sabotaged their research into Metroids. Because of her close association with the Federation, it's safe to assume that Sylux also hates Samus. However, since the bounty hunter rarely speaks, we can only judge him by his actions.
What we do know about Sylux is that he's a skilled marksman and a bounty hunter who specializes in espionage, scouting, and tracking. His signature weapon, the "Shock Coil," was an experimental, Federation-made weapon that was later banned. In fact, his power suit was also based on a Federation prototype. A recurring theme with Sylux is that he has stolen much of his weaponry and technology from the Federation.
One could speculate that there's a deeper reason for his intense hatred of the Federation. Perhaps he was a failed experiment or a disgruntled soldier. What we can assume is that he definitely worked for the Federation at some point.
Sylux has also made brief cameo appearances outside of Hunters. At the end of Metroid Prime: Federation Force, he's seen breaking into a Federation research station to steal a tube containing a Metroid Egg. And in the secret ending of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, he's shown flying after Samus in his ship if the player achieves 100% completion.
He's a very exciting character to see return in Metroid Prime 4 and an interesting concept, in my humble opinion. In games like Metroid Fusion, we Metroid fans briefly learned that there are different factions within the Galactic Federation, some of which may not be as peace-driven as the groups Samus typically works with. Perhaps Sylux was part of one of these factions and was betrayed, leading him to blame the entire Federation for its inability to control these groups.
It's going to be exciting to see what Prime 4 offers us with this character!
