The state of today's world is a bit messy to say the least. Tariffs and price increases in general are becoming increasingly common, and games are becoming more and more expensive to develop. While PlayStation has yet to make an official statement on the matter, many are wondering if we will be seeing a price increase on their products at some point. And I hate to say it, but the odds are starting to point towards yes.
This last week Microsoft officially announced that the prices will be going up on all Xbox hardware, accessories, and on first party developed games. Some console editions have increased as much as $100, while games will be bumped up to $79.99. While they didn't comment on third party games, developers are always free to set their own prices. This means $79.99 third party titles are possible, and would extend to all consoles they are available on. Microsoft also publishes their titles on other platforms as well, so this price change has already impacted PlayStation.
Putting aside Microsoft, the Nintendo Switch 2 pricing has also been a popular topic. Mario Kart World is being sold for $79.99, with other first party Nintendo games reaching the same price range as well. Many third party developers are already adjusting their prices for the Switch 2, with games like Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma being sold for $69.99. Of course some games are still $49.99-$59.99, but again, this is up to the developer to decide. Additionally Nintendo has introduced the Game-Key Card to cut down on production costs of physical games, but despite this, some games still remain at a higher price point.
Moving fully over to the PlayStation side of things; the third party titles with price increases elsewhere have already carried over to the PlayStation 5. PlayStation first parties could follow this trend, with PlayStation themselves already increasing the price of PlayStation Plus in multiple regions. This isn't then first price increase the service has seen in recent years either, with the previous increase effecting all regions.
Sadly with the way things are heading in the industry, it is very likely that PlayStation will be increasing their prices at some point as well. It hasn't been confirmed yet, but it is something fans may want to be aware of if the time does come.
So, what do you guys think? Do you expect a price increase? And how do you feel about the increases in general? Let us know in the comments below!

ReplyDeleteIf prices go up on consoles why would the PC release be cheaper?
DeleteI think it's almost a certainty that PlayStation will be going up. According to the PlayStation podcast Sacred Symbols, they have a ton of PS5s stored up to sell but they expect once they're through those and have the more expensive manufacturing prices, they expect the console to go up in price.
ReplyDeleteSony not increasing their prices would make the world love them! Not going to happen thou
