After half a year delay, the Ciel Nosurge fan translation is officially out now; includes DX version improvements ported back to the original PlayStation Vita release.
Ciel Nosurge is a prequel to Guet’s Ar Tonelico series, which previously released on the PlayStation 2 and 3. It originally released in episodic form, and featured a unique story where “you” the player used the PS Vita system to connect with a strange girl named Ion in another world. While speaking with Ion, you got to learn more about the overall greater story, and eventually figure out the mystery of who Ion is and what lead her to be isolated within her world. Eventually she builds a robot that “you” can control to help her, but this is where the story of Ciel Nosurge ends.
Going forward, Ar Nosurge was a direct follow up and sees players jumping between two viewpoints. The first is that of Delta, a central character from Ion’s past, and the second is the very robot Ion has built. While this game was released in English, the nature of the story itself threw English players directly into the middle of an ongoing story. It attempts to explain the basics, but this universe is a very complex one with multiple universe changing events that complicate things even more. Simply playing Ar Nosurge completely misses most of the story, but we had no choice.

With this fan translation, the entire story can now be experienced. Of course it requires owning a legal copy of Ciel Nosurge, and a modded Vita to play it on original hardware. We cannot provide steps on how to apply the patch, but you can learn more about the process via the translation team’s website.
This translation actually isn’t the first fan project within the series, as previously fans re-translated Ar Tonelico 2 to remain faithful to the Japanese release. Unfortunately English fans of the series continue to have to jump through hoops to fully experience the story as intended, but these same fans continue to work hard to even make it possible.
Now days Gust titles also come out in English (Atelier series being the most well known), so hopefully going forward this will no longer be an issue.
As for the Ciel Nosurge patch, there are two versions available. Both versions include the DX content, but one version of the game contains male pronouns, while the other version remains gender neutral.
