Is a Final Fantasy IX Remake on its way? Celebrating 25 Years

On July 7th 2000, history was made. Final Fantasy IX released in Japan, and was the final send off for the console before development fully shifted to the PlayStation 2.

It was a unique game that featured the classic ATB battle system the series had been known for, it had a very distinctive art style that captured the magic of Final Fantasy titles from days gone by, and it took world interaction to a whole new level for the series. With its outstanding story, world development, and all the other little details the developers managed to pack in, it was clear just how much love went into the game, and the end result was one of the greatest Final Fantasy titles of all time.

Now here we are 25 years later, and Square Enix has begun the game's celebration anniversary as rumors of a remake circulate across the internet. These rumors have been around for years, but with the 25th anniversary getting closer, many fans are starting to wonder if they are true.

Although it isn't out of the ordinary for Square Enix to mention a game's anniversary, for Final Fantasy IX they are currently going the extra mile. Recently they have been sharing new pieces of artwork for the game, while also featuring characters from the game on their social media pages, and they have been releasing new Final Fantasy IX themed merchandise (check out the Square Enix Store for more).

Of course this doesn't confirm the existence of a remake, but this is something Square Enix has a history of doing before making official announcements. Sometimes these announcements are HD ports of titles to newer platforms, but in this case Final Fantasy IX already received this treatment years ago.

So, does that mean a remake is in fact coming? No it doesn't, but we'll most likely find out more on the 7th. Even if it isn't a remake, Square seemingly has something planned for the big day, so we'll just have to wait and see.

As for confirmed projects, Square Enix has launched an official 25th Anniversary Website as well, with a music live stream set for the 7th.

Until then, here is the newly released official art.

  1. My favorite FF game. I also think probably the most unique of the entire main series. The cast is so diverse and strange looking.
