Overview:
Story
Far away from all civilization there exists an Island teeming with mysteries and secrets. This is the Island of Tydes. The best in the history of her college, Felicia the Witch sets out to uncover the mysteries of the island with the help of her conjured familiars.
Testing her abilities as the most powerful witch known to exist, Felicia exhausts all her power to conjure her own approximation of what the child pictured in many ancient murals dotted around the island would have looked like, and thus Ruru was born!
Using the power of magic, Ruru must aid Felicia in uncovering the hidden secrets and truth behind the Island of Tydes' existence. The path ahead is sure to hold fierce battles, challenging labyrinths and difficult puzzles, but with your help Ruru will prevail!
Characters
Ruru
Ruru is the main protagonist of the game. She starts of shy and timid, but works up the courage to press on through her adventure!
Freya
Freya is a fairy that takes a liking to Ruru after she saves her from a monster attack and decides to help Ruru in her adventure around the island.
Felicia
Felicia is the "Head Witch" who leads and organizes the excavation of the Island of Tydes. She is a lazy slob who just so happens to be the most powerful witch to ever exist... for some reason. She is constantly threatened to have her funding pulled by her mentor overseas due to the lack of worthwhile discoveries on the island... So maybe she's just exhausted all the time?
Peanut
Peanut is Felicia's small and fluffy assistant, doing miscellaneous tasks for her around the Village of Tydes, though usually in a way that makes things more inconvenient for him. The official reason he is her assistant is due to his expertise and experience as a researcher, but the real reason is because Felicia loves small fluffy things. Because of this, Peanut is never tasked to do any research and is instead tasked to do things that force him to think of unique solutions to his greatest problem; his height.
Charlie
Charlie is a resident of the Island of Tydes, and Charlotte's adventurous brother. He can be found now and then exploring the island. Maybe he can be helpful to you somehow?
Charlotte
Charlotte is a resident of the Island of Tydes, and Charlie's older sister. She maintains a small farm on the south-western part of the island. She is very friendly albeit a bit clumsy.
Minus
Minus is a resident of the Island of Tydes. He enjoys fishing.
Chiyo
Chiyo is a Mermaid you keep bumping into at the worst times, much to her annoyance.
Gameplay
Children of Magia is a mix of exploration, dungeon crawling, puzzle solving and real-time combat. The player must travel through mirrored worlds and into dungeons to collect key items to progress the story. Spells are acquired through the game which allow the player to heal, burn, freeze, etc. at the cost of magic. Magic can be replenished by engaging in close-range combat with enemies or finding faeries.
Themes
Much like Zelda, Children of Magia features an ongoing theme in the background that differentiate the game and give it more personality. For Ocarina of time it's growing up. For Majora's Mask it's grief and acceptance. In Twilight Princess it's responsibility... In Children of Magia it's loneliness. That doesn't mean the game is going to be a depressing slog, though. It's a subtle thing in the background, much like it is in Zelda.
