Sometimes all you really need to enjoy the evening is to unwind a bit. Do something that's repetitive but not really boring so you can shut your brain off a bit and just relax. A while back, Ben shared his first impressions of the game ReStory, a cozy repair sim developed by Mandragora. I got the chance to try out the full game and would like to share my thoughts on the experience.
Story
In ReStory we take on the role of the new owner of an electronics repair shop, and most of the "story" of the game is told through the customers you meet. You'll learn a bit about what they've got going on based on what they need fixed and why, and while some may relatively simple things like accidents and wear, you'll also come across some heartwarming or painful stories behind some of the things you clean or fix up for your customers.
Visuals and Music
The music of the game is simple and relaxing. It's nothing particularly mindblowing, but it's nice, easy listening; perfect for the cozy vibe this game has going for it.
The visual style of the game is interesting. I like the style of the character designs quite a bit, but more importantly, I like how familiar the different electronics work. They resemble devices that I've used and taken apart in my actual life, and that really helped immerse me in what I was doing.
Gameplay
Now for the most significant part of the game. Like I mentioned earlier, our shop repairs various electronics. Sometimes that's as simple as taking something apart and cleaning the pieces that are too dirty to work right, but sometimes certain components will be fully busted and you'll need to replace them. You can order certain parts specifically, or if you're willing to roll the dice, you can get the same device used online. Sometimes the ones available online are broken themselves, but it's possible you might be able to salvage the parts you need (and some extras) for less than it'd cost to order the parts directly!
Some customers will drop off their orders directly for you to work on, particularly if they're involved in the story, while some orders can also be received via email. You'll do this on the same PC where you'll order parts and apply for licenses to fix more complicated electronics. There's only a few things you can work on at first, but as you get more licenses the options really open up. You can also purchase various decorations for your shop, or things to customize the gadgets you work on like paints and stickers. You can also get better tools for cleaning and working on things with!
People who do drop things off will often take some time to talk to you, and the way you respond might influence how their stories progress. Sometimes you may even find things other than parts within the electronics, like money or notes, and it's up to you whether or not to mention what you found to the customer. It seems like there's a few different ways some of them might go, so I'll definitely be doing more playthroughs in the future!
Conclusion
I had a really good time with ReStory. Every time I'd play it, I'd intend to give it an hour or so, then look up and realize I'd put my entire afternoon into my repairs! It may not be the most complicated game, but it's incredibly relaxing and really epitomizes cozy gaming. Definitely give this one a go, it's a really great way to unwind, full of charm, and just overall a great experience. It also has a demo on Steam if you don't just wanna take my word for it!
